Facial trauma may occur for any number of reasons. Motor vehicle accidents, sports-related injuries, falls, or workplace accidents are the most common causes.
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are ideally trained to care for both the form and function of damaged facial structures because they have advanced medical training specifically focused on the numerous interworking parts of facial anatomy.
A visit with your general dental practitioner may be necessary, but in most cases of facial trauma, a medical doctor will refer you to San Antonio Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates if more advanced care is needed.
Soft Tissue Injuries
For internal or external soft tissue lacerations, including bitten tongues and cheek, gum tissue lacerations, or deep cuts to the face, our experts take special care to correct the damage and address cosmetic concerns. Given our advanced understanding of the way facial tissues work together, the team is able to offer the most advanced treatment options.
Bone Injuries
Broken facial bones are typically treated in the same way as other broken bones. The most common way of correcting any broken facial bone is using plates and screws to reset the fracture, then it is wired together until the bone heals.
Avulsed or Damaged Teeth
For patients with knocked-out (avulsed), chipped, cracked, or fractured teeth, time is of the essence. Contact our team immediately. Make sure to bring the knocked-out tooth or any large portions of teeth with you to your appointment.
Whenever possible, reinsert the tooth or piece of tooth into the empty socket. If this is not an option, store the damaged dental structure in milk or salt water until you arrive.
In some cases, we are able to restore teeth using natural dental structures. If this is not possible, we’re happy to make recommendations for the best tooth replacement and restoration options to fix your smile.
